The Tai O Centre was established to serve all the children and young residents on Lantau Island, helping them to develop their potential and enhance their knowledge of the outside world. With the support from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, we provided a 3-year project, "Caring Tai O Community" to promote a community care across different generations in Tai O. We believe that every Tai O resident can contribute to their own community, even little kids or women with lower socio-economic status would do so. It becomes utmost importance to empower such women and children through various skills and knowledge trainings.

Objectives

  1. To provide resources that enable children in Tai O to utilize their personal potential
  2. To help children attain well-balanced moral, academic, physical, social, and aesthetic development;
  3. To offer mothers and fathers support and information that will empower them to fulfill their parenting roles;
  4. To encourage children, youths, and their families to care for the Tai O community and participate in community activities.

Service Targets

6 to 24 years old children, teenagers and their parents

Service Highlights

  1. Continuous growth of the Community
    Aiming at development of a sustainable community, we provided Information Technology and English classes to enhance the youth's employability. Civic education, leadership programs and volunteer services were held throughout the year to promote a sense of belongings towards the community. We also collaborated with other organizations to provide voluntary services for the community. Our partners included many established companies, for instance, the Kowloon Golden Miles and PCCW.
  2. Empowerment of Women
    Our services are recognized increasingly among the local families. Those mothers with lower socio-economic status were particularly enthusiastic to equip themselves with various skills and knowledge. To enhance their family functioning, we provided more parenting programs in the future.
  3. Tai O Cyber Learning Centre
    Our work to alleviate the digital divide for Tai O has been awarded as the "Outstanding Partnership Project" in the Caring Company Scheme 2006-07 by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service.

  4. Serving Bui O Students
    On a mobile basis, we extended to serve the children of Bui O which is a remote community located in between Tai O and Mui Wo. We have provided various counseling group services to support the children.

  5. Enrich the Life Exposure of Tai O youth
    We mobilized the teenagers to perform band show at Stanley, learn hardware assembles at Tuen Mun and to visit the physically handicapped at Kwun Tong. For those who lead their lives in Tai O, these activities can broaden their horizons

  6. Future Plan
    We would excel ourselves towards the concept of "Caring Tai O community" and enhance the parents' role in the families by providing suitable training on communication and information technology. It is hoped that they can reciprocate the society continuously.

Member's Sharing

Mrs. Chan, mother of Ka Kai - We do not have a computer at our home. My daughter Ka Kai is studying primary one and needs to use the computer to do her homework. At first, it was a big problem for us. We are grateful that Tai O Centre of HAC started the Cyber Learning Program so that we can make use of the facilities to browse through websites. After attending the computer classes provided by the Centre, I learnt the techniques in using the computer. Now I know how to check the learning progress of Ka Kai over the internet. The facilities also enhance the communication between the school and me.
