10 years ago, the Outlying Island Social Services Mobile Team of HAC started serving people on Lamma Island. Due to historical and geographical reasons, many foreigners live on Lamma Island. However because of the cultural differences, these foreigners seldom communicated with the local residents. Some of their children also found it difficult to enjoy their school lives because of the language barrier. HAC furthermore noticed that particularly children from South-Asian families lacked proper care from their parents. In order to solve these problems, HAC strives to serve and provide opportunities for the children and teenagers living on the island. It is hoped that with the services given by HAC, the community of Lamma Island will become more vital.

Objectives

  1. To help children attain well-balanced moral, academic, physical, social and aesthetic development;
  2. To provide resources that enable children to actualize their personal potential;
  3. To offer mothers and fathers support and information that will enable them to fulfill their parenting roles;
  4. To encourage children, youths and their families to care for the community and participate in community activities.

Children, teenagers and their families on Lamma Island

Service Highlights

The door of HAC is always open for children from different races. About one out of four of our members are new immigrants from China and another quarter of them are non-Chinese speaking members. In the past year, we organised various services, e.g. Sunshine Community of Lamma Island, Chinese classes for foreign children, a teenager volunteer training program and personal counselling services. HAC also organised large scale events like Lamma Carnival, Environmental Day with G.E. volunteers and receiving a Civil Services Official from mainland China in the Lamma Island Centre.

HAC keeps close contact with inhabitants on the island so that we know their current needs. Moreover, local leaders, district councillors and schools\ principals also give us a lot of valuable opinions and chances for co-operation. We are glad to have the support from these officials so that the parents and children on the island are confident and happy to be served and join the activities provided by HAC.

Future Plan

    Lamma Island Centre hopes to achieve the following:

  1. Racial Integration and Appreciation: foreign children get a chance to learn the Chinese language and culture. Through understanding, it is hoped that foreign children can gradually be friends with the locals.

  2. Broaden children's horizon: provides the chances for the children joining activities out of the island so that they can meet other people and broaden their horizon.

  3. Harmony within the community: HAC will organise volunteer works and carnivals on the island, so that local inhabitants, non-Chinese speaking people and new immigrants from China get a chance to know each other.

  4. Digital Solidarity: provide basic computer training for the minority and low income families so that they can keep contact with the outside world.

Tom (right) 12-year-old
I came to live on Lamma Island in Hong Kong five years ago. When I first entered the primary school on Lamma Island, I found that local children, western children and new immigrant's children played separately. As my English was not good by that time, I dared not to speak to other children of different groups. In 2005, I joined the "Sunshine Community of Lamma Island" Program. I therefore got the chance to join the after-school-care-program and play with children from different nations, precious friendship gradually grown among us.

Richard (left) 10-year-old, from a mixed British/ Philippine family.
In the beginning, I considered Tom's appearance very different from the rest of the western children, so I avoided staying too close to him. However, in HAC, we got the chance to talk and I found out that he was actually very good at sports and later we joined together to play football. This year, Tom is the first in class academically, and whenever I got a problem with my homework, he will teach me patiently. As my mother tongue is English, I will help Tom when he puzzles with English.
