Computer Training
Courses Enhance
Mutual Help Networks in the Community
Computer and internet usage are part
of the every day lives of people nowadays. Many citizens,
however, are not familiar with the digital world. HAC therefore
provides courses to help grassroots people bridge the digital
divide.
In 2009, with generous sponsorship
from Microsoft (Hong Kong) Limited and Partnership Fund For
the Disadvantaged, HAC successfully established the Community
Technology Learning Centres in Wong Tai Sin and Lamma Island,
helping women, retired people and unemployed to connect with
the on-line society.
May Wong, Executive Director of HAC
said, "There were over three thousand people that benefited
from the over one hundred courses provided. These courses
vary from basic computer knowledge to website making. In order
to further enhance the community network, this year HAC will
recruit a dozen teenagers and provide them with intensive
training on computer maintenance. It is hoped that after six
months' training, they can start helping people in the East
Kowloon district by maintaining or repairing their computers.
If this pilot scheme is successful, we intend to expand the
project in future.
Pang Chun Ying, one of the teenagers
joining the intensive training course, shares, "Living in
an international city like Hong Kong, I hope to equip myself
with various skills, including computer knowledge and help
those in need."
Courses on web 2.0 usage will also
be given to middle age grassroots people to improve their
daily lives. For example, online booking of government facilities,
creating of a personal 'blog', etc, may help these people
to better connect with friends and relatives over the internet.
In 2010, HAC will also enhance the
collaboration with schools in East Kowloon, sharing internet
safety issues with parents and students. For those who are
interested in the projects mentioned above, please contact
