4. What descriptive details will you include to make your story lively and vivid? In particular, who are the characters in the story and what is the setting (where and when the story takes place)? Here is some advice to consider

  • Show don’t tell
  • Evoke the senses (i.e., sight, hearing, feeling/touch, taste, smell)
  • Use vivid and accurate specifics to make the story, characters, setting and events real and rich. What are characters’ names? What do they look like? Is there anything special or distinctive in their appearance or in the way they sound or behave? When they talk, which language do they use? What kind of vocabulary or slang do they use? In stories, dialogue can enliven the characters and action for listeners.
