Patron's remarks

"Having made a stroll round the globe, I hope I have left my footprints in the world and they will be there forever . " We should trust ourselves and make the best of our lives both for the benefit of others and of ourselves ." - Professor Charles K. Kao, patron of the Hans Andersen Club.

Be a Role Model

Prof . Kao , who has spent most of his life in scien tific research , began his retired years in social service by chance. Despite his humble claims that he knows little about social service, Prof. Kao is nonetheless a patron of the Hans Andersen Club and a trustee o f the S.K. Yee Medical Foundation. He hopes to set an example by "doing some good" for society.

"The poor deserve our sympathy . We should try our best to help them." Armed with this simple belief, Prof . Kao made his first step into the social service sector. He knows pretty well that social problems are compl ex and solutions are almost never immediate ly available. But what counts most is perseverance . Everyone , he said, should do his or her utmost for benevolence .

Prof. Kao remarked that many problems cannot be solved by money alone . What is required is true understand ing of the needs of others through communication. Education is also important as it helps people to learn and grow . He urged us to give others a chance . A small step forward can create a sense of achievement and greater leaps forward in the future.

He believes that the government should reflect on problems and stay tuned in to people's true desires . It is only by doing so that they can set up a sound system and perform their best. The business and social service sectors should work together in harmony to propel society forward.

Prof . Kao believes that Hong Kong is a wonderful place. He hopes everyone can take that extra step to make it a city of love and care , and a role model to other cities and mainland China .
